The Boy Who Listened - August 7th, 2011

Brother Kevin led today's lesson about Samuel hearing the voice of God. As a young boy, Samuel worked as a servant to Eli within the tabernacle. 1 Samuel 3:1 reminds us that, "and the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision." When Samuel was sleeping, he heard the voice of the Lord call out to him. He thought it was Eli and three times he asked Eli if he was calling him. Eli then tells Samuel that it is the voice of the Lord and to answer, "here I am."
How does God call us to work for Him? God's voice is not always audible. He often uses a still, small voice in our hearts. Or He may call to us through the preaching of the Word or a Sunday school lesson. Why do you think God spoke to Samuel while he was sleeping in bed? God needs us to be still in order to hear Him clearly. In our busy, noisy world, it is hard to filter out all the distractions to hear God speaking to our hearts. If we want to hear God's call, we have to be still and listen. Because Samuel was still and listened to God's voice, he was mightily used for the greater good of our heavenly kingdom. He later became a priest, a prophet, and a judge. He was the voice that God used to lead His people.
